Born on May 10, 1957, Max Mitchell began his lifelong musical journey at just nine years old, taking over piano duties for his family band, The Mitchells (originally The Gospel Tones Trio). Throughout his teens and early adulthood, Max performed tirelessly with the group—often 20+ nights a month—bringing gospel music to audiences across the Midwest.

At 17, Max stepped into the studio for the first time, both as a recording artist and as a producer for his family’s albums. His passion for music quickly led him to work as a studio pianist and session musician for other artists as well.

Max continued performing with The Mitchells until their retirement in 2018, after which he joined the Red Letter Quartet as pianist and vocalist and began performing with his son, Damon Mitchell, as part of Damon’s touring band. With Damon, Max has recorded at the iconic Sun Studios (Memphis, TN), has opened for legendary acts including Foreigner, Blue Öyster Cult, and even shared the stage with America for an encore of “Horse With No Name.”

Today, Max remains active in both the gospel and rock worlds—performing keyboards with Damon and bass with the gospel group The Conquerors.

This year, Max is honored with a nomination for Musician of the Year (Piano/Keyboards) at the 11th Annual Josie Music Awards, held November 2 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN—recognizing a lifetime of musicianship and dedication to his craft.

Ava Murbarger is a young fantasy and science fiction author from Southern Illinois whose stories seek out the light without ignoring the dark. A Christian, homeschooler, and pastor’s kid, she lives with her parents and younger brother and has been telling stories for as long as she can remember.

Her passion for writing began with a love of worldbuilding, first sparked by building on stories she’d read and, for a time, creating dragon-filled adventures. That creative spark became something more with her debut novel, Healer, the first book in her Orythian Journeys series. The saga continues with Outlaw and is planned as a five-book series—Ava is currently halfway through Book Three.

Ava honed her skills as a member of the Young Writer’s Workshop and several critique groups, and she continues to challenge herself to create meaningful stories that resonate with readers. Among her literary influences are Andrew Peterson, N. D. Wilson, and Christopher Hopper, authors whose works she frequently rereads for inspiration.

Beyond the page, Ava is passionate about music—she plays guitar and often finds focus while writing by listening to Twenty One Pilots. She also enjoys games like Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: the Gathering, and has a keen interest in Greek and Roman mythology.
